Completed in January 2012, the new 19,700 square foot cafeteria for Lahainaluna High School replaces an existing outdated cafeteria that was constructed in 1963.
The program called for a modern and highly functional full-service kitchen with dining and assembly capacities for 650 and 1,000 students, respectively. Foodservice includes breakfast and dinner for the school’s 118 boarding students.
The dining/assembly space is radial in design to promote sightlines to the center stage. A wrap-around lanai provides for shaded exterior dining and social gathering areas for students with views towards the ocean and neighbor islands. High ceilings with exposed trusses, acoustic structural decking, high-performance low-speed ceiling fans, daylight tubes, and stack ventilation provisions are part of the innovative design and contribute to the openness of the space, acoustic clarity and occupant thermal comfort in a naturally ventilated environment.
The project is designed to be LEED Silver equivalent and was fully commissioned.
