– – – – 1994 PULAMA OHANA AWARD RECIPIENT- – – –

The Pulama Ohana Award (“to care for, cherish and nurture the family”) was first presented in November of 1990 and was a result of the Hawaii Community Services Council’s desire to honor private businesses who have taken the initiative in increasing the well-being of the American family. One of the most important roles of the Hawaii Community Services Council is in helping the community to shift direction and shift ways of looking at the challenges that we face. The Pulama Ohana Award recognizes publicly companies that have responded to the changing nature of the work force with ideas that address work-family concerns. The recipients of this award have developed exemplary programs and policies that support their employees and families as well as the families in the wider community.

Ferraro Choi & Associates, Ltd. (FCA) is a medium sized architectural firm that endeavors to maintain a strong position in a highly competitive arena. The firm’s policy is to always treat employees with fairness and goodwill. In a profession known for high employee turnover Ferraro Choi is remarkably stable. In this firm, where employee is part of the ohana, morale and productivity are high. When three employees brought home new babies, the company provided work flexibility programs, including work stations at home, as a part of sharing in the happy events. Also, when a staff member passed away from AIDS this year, every member of the firm without exception or request, provided work, financial and moral support to the employee and his partner.

Ferraro Choi encourages and supports staff involvement in a variety of charities and causes, and encourages good health and exercise for all members of this professional ohana. Continuing education and research are supported and encouraged. FCA believes that good design is reflective of an open mind and a constant search for new ideas as well as a respectful and knowledgeable integration of culture and history. This visionary company merges the personal with the professional for the benefit of all.

On behalf of the People of the City and County of Honolulu, the Council congratulates FERRARO CHOI & ASSOCIATES, LTD., recipient of the 1994 Pulama Ohana Award, and offers sincere gratitude for their contribution to the overall well-being of our community.
