SF VariesHawaiian Airlines is regarded as the premier airline serving the Hawaii market. The neighbor island Ticketing and Check-In lobbies in Kona, Hilo, Kahului, and Lihue were renovated to improve and enhance the guest experience, and to refresh and update the carrier’s branding.
Through brainstorming and collaboration sessions with Hawaiian to create a theme and identity, “the journey of the guests” emerged as inspiration for the design. The outrigger canoes used by ancient Hawaiians in their navigation of the Pacific became a metaphor for airplanes carrying modern day travelers to their destinations. The inception of one’s journey from land, to the shore, and to the skies was also created as an over arching theme. Ferraro Choi worked with Hawaiian Airlines’ cultural consultant who designed graphic symbols for each island with a unifying identity which has been incorporated into the check-in counters.
Accommodating varying neighbor island airport regulations, the goal was to create a unified design that could be flexible based on the individual location needs and conditions. The work consisted of new check-in counters, decorative wall panels, digital and static signage, queuing stanchions and divider paneling, column enclosers, and task and decorative lighting.
Design and construction were completed in very compressed timelines.
