Hawaii Theatre -Historic Exterior Renovation

Following Hawaii Theatre’s interior restoration under New York theater design firm Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer, Ferraro Choi was commissioned as the architect to guide the renovation and preservation of the theatre’s historic exterior.

The renovation followed the Secretary of the Interior’s Preservation for the Treatment of Historic Properties and included complete reconstruction of the 1930s-era neon marquee and vertical “HAWAII” blade sign. State-of-the-art Light Emitting Diode technology was incorporated into the new marquee to enhance theatre marketing without impacting its historic appearance. Exterior lighting and building colors were computer modeled to inform design decisions made jointly with the Owner.

The Hawaii Theatre was originally designed by architects Walter Emory and Marshall Webb and opened in 1922. It is listed on both the Hawaii and National Registers of Historic Places.
