About

Founded in 1938, The Hawaii Medical Service Association (HMSA) is a Blue Cross and Blue Shield member, nonprofit health insurance company. HMSA is headquartered in Honolulu, with several branch locations on neighbor islands. HMSA has selected a site in the town of Kea‘au for the location of a new facility – the HMSA Kea‘au Village Branch Office. The project consists of two, two-story 20,000-square-foot buildings developed in two phases. Situated on a site fronting the Old Volcano Road, the project is jointly developed between HMSA and W.H. Shipman, Ltd. Phase 1, scheduled for completion in 2015, is the HMSA Customer Service Call Center, Customer Service Walk-in / Retail space, and related support space. The future Phase 2, Building 2, will provide space for future operations expansion or be developed for lease to tenants in the medical industry. The historic plantation-style building architecture is is defined by a single pitch 6:12 sloping roof and the approximately 50-foot wide inset in the middle of the front of the building. The inset also serves to create a shadow plane on the exterior façade of the building, breaking up the long linear mass of the buildings into three distinct segments: entry/lanai flanked by two symmetrical wings.
